Lies about Your Skin that Must Be Finally Corrected

by Monic Bert

You must have heard that there are as many opinions as there are people. It is true yet there is one exception – skin care routine. How to tell the truth from the myth? Today, you are going to see the most enduring skin care myths and bid them farewell. We explain the biggest lies about your skin.

Skin Care – Facts & Myths

1. YOU CAN’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT SKIN AGING

It is obviously a lie. We can’t do much about the existing deep wrinkles (unless we go for aesthetic procedures) but we can definitely delay and slow down aging processes. The lifestyle we live has a huge impact on the way the skin looks. If you’re a smoker, eat bad food, never exercise plus you live in the city and fail to protect your face from smog and pollution – you can significantly speed up the occurrence of wrinkles and processes which lead to loss of elasticity and suppleness. Stress, coffee and alcohol don’t enhance the youthfulness either.

In order to slow down skin aging, use antioxidant-rich creams which have a high SPF and ingredients protecting from toxins, pollution and visible light (recent studies have shown that blue light emitted by television sets, smartphones and tablets are bad for the skin). Enrich your diet with lots of vitamins, eat healthy meals rich in veggies and fruit, drink mineral water and moisturise your skin. Take care of yourself and give your skin the reason for being beautiful.

2. DRINK LOTS OF WATER TO MOISTURISE YOUR SKIN

It is partly true. Even though mineral water, juices and herbal teas make the whole body function properly and hydrate it from within, we must make sure that water doesn’t escape from the epidermis and keep it under the surface. You must have heard of TEWL (Trans Epidermal Water Loss) – it means that water runs away through the skin. When the problem gets bigger, this may lead to skin dehydration. In order to reduce the TEWL level, try a fine-quality moisturiser which locks water inside the epidermis. A moisturising cream keeps precious water molecules in skin and maintains the right level of hydration.

3. YOU CAN SHRINK YOUR SKIN PORES

Sorry, you can’t. You can camouflage them a little bit by in-depth cleansing to make them less visible – sebum won’t build up. It’s worth knowing that large pores might be genetic. Deep, regular cleansing with mild, non-invasive and non-dehydrating products will make them look smaller. However, the ability of the pores to shrink weakens when we age so they may appear bigger with the years passing.

4. YOU SHOULDN’T MOISTURISE OILY SKIN

The most common lie connected with oily skin care. The myth saying that moisturisers are exclusive to dry skin as well as ‘treating’ acne skin with alcohol-based, strongly-dehydrating products are characteristic for the past epoch when this kind of approach was popular in skin care. On the other hand, skin might be getting greasy because it’s missing… moisture. It needs repair, support, hydration and – worrying about the total loss of water – it starts overproducing sebum. In other words, the skin may get extremely dry because of lack of balance between moisture and sebum. That is why you must choose products that bring back this balance, intensively moisturise and help remove sebum, not causing dryness at the same time.

5. OILS ARE UNSUITABLE FOR OILY SKIN CARE

Another lie that needs correcting. Oils are greasy so most of us don’t trust them. Surprisingly, natural oils turn out to work wonders both for oily and acne-prone skin. Coconut and jojoba oils are second to none for these skin types. The former prevents bacteria, has an antiseptic effect, repairs, soothes and fixes the skin, whereas the latter excellently balances sebum secretion, treats acne blemishes, restores moisture and protects skin from dehydration.
