How long does it take beauty products to work?

by Monic Bert

“Instant effect!”, “Money-back guarantee!” – we often read and hear such slogans on the radio, Internet and TV. That’s why we tend to get impatient if we can’t see immediate results. We like to think that effective products must work instantly. Are we right? Here’s a summary of when – according to manufacturers – certain beauty products (for face, body and hair) should give the effects.

When do moisturizers start working?

Moisturizing products work almost immediately. Face moisturizer is the most popular – it is fast-absorbing, rapidly softens and smoothes out the skin surface. Used on a regular basis, it prevents skin photoaging. How do moisturizers work? Actually, they don’t literally moisturize the skin – they prevent the loss of water.

When do anti-acne treatments start working?

Unfortunately, anti-acne products don’t work like moisturizers so they don’t give an instant effect – you need to wait even for twelve weeks! Why? Plenty of factors decide on the occurrence of acne so anti-acne treatments need time to neutralize all of them. It takes quite a lot of time before they kill bacteria causing the acne (propionibacterium acnes), balance the sebum secretion and solve other acne-prone skin problems.

When do scrubs start working?

Both chemical and physical exfoliants give immediate effects. Why? They exfoliate dead skin cells once you apply them. The skin looks fresh and radiant right away. Even though the effect is instant, it doesn’t last long so you need to use scrubs on a regular basis.

When do shampoos start working?

Similarly to anti-acne treatments, shampoos take time to start working. How long do you need to wait? A week on condition that you use it every day. Hair needs seven days to get rid of the residue of the previous shampoo and get used to a new one.

When do hair masks start working?

Unlike shampoos, hair masks give an immediate effect after a single use. However, the results get better if you keep using the mask regularly (ideally, every three days). After a month of such treatment, the condition of your hair will be way better. You just need to remember to squeeze the excess of water before applying a mask – otherwise the mask is going to drip off instead of penetrating the hair shaft.

Effects of beauty products

Summing up, some products give instant effects after the very first use: moisturizers, scrubs and hair masks. Others such as anti-acne treatments and shampoos need time to visibly improve the condition of skin or hair. That is why you shouldn’t get discouraged by your new cosmetic if you can’t see desired results after the first use. Follow our advice: be patient and keep away from the bin!
